Keep your eyes open. Surprise artwork may suddenly appear, stay for a while then just as suddenly disappear. These were near Parque Andres Bello, within easy walking distance from the Spanish Panama Language School.
The people from Fundacion Alada, Panama Bird Festival and the Junta Comunal de Bella Vista put up a sign saying: Welcome to Barrio El Cangrejo, a friendly community with birds and trees.
Via Argentina has a center park-like strip of lawn with various plants and trees, the median. You can hear the various birds singing, or or watch them searching the sidewalks for possible food bits.
In November of 2022, several strange bird-shaped sculptures appeared in the median of Via Argentina, plus one green grasshopper. I asked several people about them but none noticed this new addition until I told them where to look.
Each form was made from pieces of car and truck tires, mounted on a short post that was stuck in the ground. Tread textures were chosen to suggest the plumage of different birds then painted to heighten the likeness. The tire-grasshopper was painted green.
Someone had a cleaver idea to use old tires. Very creative. These figures stayed in the median for about a month then vanished.
Months later, in April 2023, a single tire-bird appeared, dangling from a tree in Parque Andres Bello. A gigantic tire-hummingbird hanging from a rope, swinging slowly in the breeze.
What will they think up next? Will there be more tire-birds? Keep alert for the next sighting.
