Teacher Elsa: “Culture Shock” upon returning home to Panama
In 1994, as an 8 year old, I left Panama to live in Jacksonville, FL USA. I came back home to Panama, 17 years later and encountered some “culture shock” on my return.
First off, the traffic and the way people drive here was very different to what I was used to and I was afraid to get behind the wheel, but I did. As a result, I wrecked my car as I had a US (polite and correct) driving style. But with some practice, a couple of months later, I was “driving like a Panamanian”!
Something else I came across in Panama was a more relaxed attitude towards life. With this comes people being frequently late, and service at restaurants can be quite slow. Also your experience at a public/government office can be frustrating and might delay your day’s activities. Panama can be challenging to get accustomed to, but my recommendation to you is to have an open mind and be patient in order to enjoy this beautiful country.
